THE YEAR IN A NUTSHELL

Welcome Back! We are so excited to

get to know you!

AUGUST IN ROOM D1

Welcome to D1 and second grade.  The teachers and students will get to know each other as second grade begins. We will supply all materials. All your student needs is a backpack, and lunchpail (unless they are getting hot lunch). Please also remember to send a good healthy snack as we will be learning and growing everyday! We can't wait to meet you!

SEPTEMBER IN ROOM D1

The students will begin their first units of study in second grade.  We are reading Silly Stories in the Houghton Mifflin Literary Program.  We will study amphibians and read nonfiction and fiction stories about frogs and toads.  We're off to a fun and educational year!

OCTOBER IN ROOM D1

Now is time to focus on spiders as we read nonfiction and learn about the six legged creatures.  Of course we will culminate our study on October 31 with a spider party. We will be visiting Twin Hills Apple Farm to learn about the apple harvest and of course, pick a pumpkin! We will make apple sauce from our hand picked apples and study the different stages of matter, solid, liquid, and gas.  Please drop by the office and look at our "Halloween Math" on display. It's very spoooooky!

NOVEMBER IN D1

In November we will learn about Thanksgiving and think about those things that we are thankful for and why.  We will study insects this month and compare them to spiders. In art, we will be making lovely center pieces for you to enjoy on your Thanksgiving Table! Enjoy your time off with family and friends.

DECEMBER IN ROOM D1

The second grade students in room D1 are working to present a play of "The Elves and the Shoemaker." The students are reading and writing about the fairy tale as they compare various versions of this story.  This allows the students to better understand their character as they  work toward achievement and mastery of our district and state standards in writing and reading.  This busy holiday season allows us to study many customs that are celebrated during this time.  In math, we continue to learn and practice new concepts daily.

JANUARY IN ROOM D1

Family is our theme as the students read several fun stories about families in our Houghton Mifflin Reading series.  We will also finish our social studies unit about families and holiday traditions.  This study will help students gain more knowledge of other families and traditions.  Please look forward to our Heritage Study and Celebration that will take place in May.

                                         FEBRUARY IN ROOM D1

February is a fun and exciting month in Second Grade! In Social Studies, we will be studying communities and the  varying jobs within them, as well as taking a field trip to the Santa Rosa Police Department and Fire Department! This is always a fun and exciting adventure! We are finishing our science unit on the weather, and boy did we have some great weather to study this month! Our next science unit will be on rocks and minerals. In Language Arts, we will read a story called Chinatown, celebrate Chinese New Year, and then finish our unit about Families. In math we are working hard on subtracting and adding with borrowing and regrouping. We will also be going to The Wells Fargo Center to see a play about Madeline and the Bad Hat, and talking and writing about what the students would do if they were President, in honor of President's Day. We will also celebrate Valentine's Day with special activities and a party! Remember: February 11, and 18 are holidays, there will be no school that day. Enjoy your time off!

MARCH IN ROOM D1

March is a short month with a lot to do. We will learn about whales, the ocean and endangered animals. After completing an interesting whale report, each student will make a whale that will swim in our homemade ocean. We'll have a whale of a time learning about and making whales! We will also take a field trip to Petaluma High School to visit their Animal Museum. This will help each of us when we write our animal report.

APRIL IN ROOM D1

The students will be hard at work completing several projects that will be on display for Open House. Please join us so the students can share their projects with you and show you around their classroom.  We look forward to seeing you!

STAR Testing begins in late April.  Please help your child get a good night rest,  a healthy breakfast, and be sure they to school on time, as we will be testing in the morning.
